Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers.

A noted filmmaker, entrepreneur and environmental advocate, Burtynsky is first known internationally for his incredibly detailed images documenting the consequences and process of using the earth's natural resources. 

One of the recurring themes in his work is the interaction of industry and environment. The artist explained: “I have always been concerned with showing how we affect the earth in a big way”.

This work is a paradigm from one of Burtynsky's most successful series: Quarries. Burtynsky documented marble and granite quarrying in Vermont, Portugal, Italy, and Spain. For this particular image, he traveled to Pardais, a small town in Portugal.

While "Iberia Quarries #9" documents the environmental exploitation, the overall work has an incredible texture and rich palette. It presents an astonishing wealth of detail, allowing us to see clearly equipment and workers hundreds of feet from the camera.

Edward Burtynsky's work can be found in the permanent collection of countless museums including the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim, TATE Modern (London) and MoMA to mention a few.
