The DR1 Ladies Lab Coat gets its inspiration from a medical team led by one Tu Youyou. A team that transformed an ancient Chinese healing method into the most powerful antimalarial medicine currently available. In 1967, the Chinese government decided there was an urgent need to find a cure for malaria, forming the research team Project 523. Named after its starting date, 23 May 1987, Tu Youyou was appointed project manager of a team that combined practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine with modern chemists, pharmacologists, and scientists. Worldwide, scientists had already screened over 240,000 compounds without success, giving Tu the idea to investigate ancient Chinese medicines. Screening over 2000 tradition Chinese herbal remedies, the team came across sweet wormwood, a plant used as an antimalarial therapy in 400 AD. Tu’s team identified a compound in the plant effective against malaria, called artemisinin. Using a traditional extraction process of boiling water, they were able to isolate the compound, however, the tests were unsuccessful. Tu reread the ancient texts, discovering that the high-temperature extraction process was damaging the active ingredient; she proposed a new low-temperature extraction method. After retesting, the drug proved to be completely effective. Tu volunteered to be the first human subject, stating that as head of the research team, it was her responsibility. Declaring the drug safe, Tu conducted successful clinical trials with human patients, confirming the ground-breaking discovery. Tu pioneered a new approach to the treatment of malaria, applying modern techniques to 5000 years of Chinese traditional practitioners. Credited for benefiting hundreds of millions of people and halving mortality rates in just 15 years, Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine in 2015.
